The Station 1 Blog #1: New Year, New Blog

Well, we did it. We made it through 2016. I think we all can agree that it was a long and difficult year. But hopefully you all are ready to take on 2017. Here at Station 1, we have some big plans for this year. Be sure to look out for new music and new exciting things.

This blog is one of the new things we’re trying out this year. A couple times a month, we will be posting something new on the blog. Sometimes it will be a peek behind the scenes, other times it will be something a bit more fun. Each post will be a bit different, so you don’t want to miss a single one!

For this inaugural blog post, I thought it would be cool to let everyone in on a small part of the behind the scenes operation at Station 1. Each week, the core team meets to discuss the tasks that need to get done, both short-term and long-term. This includes concert planning, music releases, and making sure we’re staying connected to the Des Moines community. The topic of each meeting changes from week to week, but we’re always focused on planning things with our artists. When we’re making big decisions about their next steps, the artists are involved. We’re always focused on the artist.

From our weekly meetings, our core team splits up and focuses on our tasks. There are often weeks with many extra meetings, and many emails are exchanged back and forth. A lot goes on between the weekly meetings.

Right now, one of our biggest focuses is bringing the “House Party” to Des Moines. Hosted monthly at Lefty’s Live Music (2307 University Ave, Des Moines,) the “House Party” will be featuring Station 1 Records artist Markaus and a curated group of performers, visual artists, literati, and more. The mission of the house party is twofold. First, the event is for expanding our conscious while having a good time. Second, a portion of the proceeds will be going to charitable organizations around the metro. Basically, it’s a party with a purpose. The first “House Party” will be this Friday, 1/27. We hope you’ll be there!

The size of core team has fluctuated over the years, as interns and volunteers have come and gone. But we still manage to get things done. However, if you would like to help us out in our quest to put Des Moines on the music map, you can send volunteer enquires to

And if you don’t have the time to volunteer, make sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter and Instagram. And tell your friends about our label and our mission. Help us spread the word about Des Moines’ music scene and Station 1 Records!

Until then, the core team and myself are going to be working hard to keep Station 1 rocking at 33 1/3 revolutions per minute!

Catch you next time,
